Layers of Goodness: How to Layer Your Skincare Routine

The order in which you apply your skincare products will directly affect how your skin will absorb them. But with so many skincare products on the market these days, it’s tough to know where to start. Don’t worry—we’re here to make skincare simple again. Here’s a basic guide to layering your skincare products for beginners.

General tips

As a general rule, you should apply your skincare products from thinnest to thickest. This will give the more watery products in your routine (like toners and serums) time to soak into your skin without having to compete with denser oils and creams. Just remember to allow each layer time to thoroughly dry before moving on to the next one!

1. Cleanser

Before you start applying your products, you’ll need a clean slate to work with. Start your skincare routine by gently cleansing your skin with your favorite cleanser or exfoliant. If your skin needs an extra deep clean, you can try double cleansing. What is double cleansing? Exactly what it sounds like. To double cleanse your face, start with an oil-based cleanser to remove any leftover makeup, oil, or dirt that might be trapped in your pores. Then, cleanse again with a foaming product to give your skin an extra deep clean.

2. Toner

Originating in Korean skincare routines, toner is a relatively new addition to beauty routines in the West, but it’s definitely a valuable one. Toner replenishes your skin by stripping away any residue that your cleansers might’ve left behind and balances your skin’s PH levels. Because most toners have such a watery consistency, it should be the first thing you apply after cleansing. There are tons of awesome toners on the market today, but if you want to keep things simple, a quick dab of witch hazel on a cotton ball will tone your skin just fine.

3. Serum

After toner, it’s time to give your face a jolt of energy. Serums are ultra-concentrated skin treatments that are packed with vitamins and nutrients to nourish your skin. If you struggle with dullness or dark spots, a vitamin C serum can brighten your face. Worried about fine lines and wrinkles? Reach for a serum with hyaluronic acid to give your skin a youthful glow. Choose a serum that reflects your unique skin care needs, and give it plenty of time to soak in before moving on.

4. Eyecare

The delicate skin under your eyes is one of the most sensitive parts of your face, and it needs special care. Apply your favorite undereye cream after using a serum to fight off dark circles, eyebags, or wrinkles. A special trick is to apply your product with your pinky, since it’s the weakest of all the fingers on your hand. The light pressure will keep you from tugging or irritating this extra fragile skin.

5. Facial Oil

Facial oils combine the nourishment of serums with the rejuvenating power of moisturizers, giving your skin the best of both worlds. Obviously, we’re huge fans of our line of 100% organic full-spectrum CBD facial oils for this step. We focused on providing a gentle and effective solution for your skin using only three ingredients. Our full-spectrum CBD and hemp seed oil both combat redness and inflammation, while our variety of stand-out ingredients gives you an extra nourishing touch of goodness. Currently, you can choose from our selection of Jojoba, Seaberry, or Marula oil blends to compliment your skin. Pick your favorite and gently massage 4-5 drops into your skin to soothe and lock in moisture.

6. Moisturizer

After using a facial oil, your skin might be moisturized enough. But if you struggle with dry skin, an extra level of moisture might be in order. Lock in the moisture on your face with your favorite cream or gel-based moisturizer. Use a patting or dabbing motion rather than a rubbing one. This helps your skin absorb the moisturizer better and avoids irritating sensitive skin. Some people may find they prefer using a facial oil after their moisturizer instead — this works too! As a bonus tip, you can also mix a few drops of your favorite facial oil with your moisturizer for a winning combo.

7. Sunscreen and/or spot treatments

Once you’re all finished, it’s time to preserve all your hard work! UV rays can be dangerous all season long, so it’s important to protect your face by applying sunscreen in the morning. If you’re headed to bed instead, you can also apply spot treatments for pimples or blemishes. When using spot treatment in tandem with moisturizer, make sure you give the spot treatment proper time to soak in before applying moisturizer. Or if your skin is extra sensitive, you may opt to apply moisturizer before your spot treatment. Choose whichever method best suits your skin.

8. Make It Your Own

Let’s get real for a sec. While each step in your skincare routine serves a purpose, the more complicated your routine is, the less likely you are to keep it up every day. The imperfect routine you can actually stick to is better than the perfect one you never do.

If you’re short on time or feeling lazy, limit your routine to the bare essentials. Because the natural formula in our full-spectrum CBD facial oils are so powerful, you can still get amazing results using them on their own. Just cleanse your skin, massage it in, and go about your day. It’s a simple way to keep your skin looking and feeling awesome without the hassle!
